What Vet Controlled Substance Log does
- Per-drug perpetual ledgerRegister each controlled substance with its DEA schedule, strength, and form, then log acquisitions, administrations/dispensing, waste, and transfers as they happen. Every entry updates a running on-hand balance for that drug.
- Discrepancy flags, not silent driftIf a manual count doesn't match the running balance, the app flags the difference on the drug's record instead of quietly adjusting the number for you.
- Biennial inventory count workflowA guided count wizard walks through every active drug, records the counted quantity and date, and reconciles it against the calculated balance at that moment.
- Witness field for waste entriesWaste/disposal entries carry a witness name field alongside quantity and reason, matching how many practices already document destruction of controlled substances.
- Per-veterinarian usage viewAdministrations can be tagged to the treating veterinarian, so a single drug's history can be reviewed by prescriber as well as by date.
- Audit-ready PDF exportGenerate a logbook-style PDF for one drug or a full date range — acquisition, administration, waste, and balance columns in order — ready to hand to an inspector or keep for your own records.
Vet Controlled Substance Log is a recordkeeping tool only. It does not file DEA Form 222 orders, does not submit anything to the DEA or any state board, and does not verify that your practice's controlled substance handling meets federal or state requirements. Confirm your recordkeeping obligations with the DEA and your state veterinary board.
Frequently asked questions
- Does this app file anything with the DEA on my behalf?
- No. It keeps your own ledger on your device. Ordering, reporting, and filing remain your practice's responsibility through the DEA's own systems.
- What happens when a count doesn't match the running balance?
- The discrepancy is recorded and flagged on the drug's record — it is never silently corrected. You decide how to investigate and document the difference.
- Can more than one staff member log entries?
- The app is designed for use on one device by the practice's controlled-substance recordkeeper. There is no multi-user login or role system.
- Can I export a report for just one drug, or for an inspection?
- Yes. The PDF export can be scoped to a single drug or a date range across your full registry.
